What the Indonesia E33G actually is

Indonesia launched the E33G "Remote Worker Visa" in 2024, replacing the older B211A tourist-extended visa that nomads had been using as a workaround. The E33G is a formal long-stay visa specifically designed for remote workers. It operates under Permenkumham 22/2023 (Ministry of Law regulation) and is administered by Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi.

The E33G gives you: - 1 year of legal stay in Indonesia (extendable for 1 more year, total 2 years). - Right to live anywhere in Indonesia (Bali is the primary target, but Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Lombok also accessible). - 0% Indonesian income tax on foreign-source income. - Right to enter and exit Indonesia freely during validity.

What the E33G does not directly authorize: - Working for Indonesian employers (different visa: KITAS for work, etc.). - Forming an Indonesian company without involving an Indonesian partner. - Permanent residency (E33G doesn't lead to KITAP or KITAS-T).

For US/UK/EU remote workers, Indonesia (especially Bali) has been a top digital nomad destination since 2018-2020. The E33G formalized what was previously a workaround through tourist visa extensions. The 2026 sponsor requirement (Q1 2026 tightening) added complexity but also legitimacy.

Eligibility

Six criteria.

2.1 Nationality

Available to non-Indonesian citizens. US, Canadian, EU, UK, Australian, etc. all eligible.

2.2 Employment

You qualify as one of: - Remote employee of a foreign company (registered outside Indonesia with verifiable activity). - Freelancer/contractor for foreign clients. - Owner of a foreign company managing it remotely.

You cannot work for Indonesian employers under the E33G. That requires a different visa category (KITAS or KITAP).

2.3 Income + Bank balance

$60,000/year USD gross income from the last 12 months PLUS $2,000 minimum bank balance at submission.

The annual figure is non-negotiable. Indonesia is among the higher income thresholds in the lot (along with Estonia €54k and Barbados $50k).

The $2,000 bank balance requirement is unusual and catches some applicants — Imigrasi wants to see liquid cash, not just income flow. Show a bank statement dated within 30 days of submission with the $2,000+ visible balance.

Family math: - Single: $60,000/year + $2,000 bank balance. - Family (spouse + 2 kids max): no formal income uplift, but Ministerio de Hukum (Minister of Law) can require additional savings proof — typically $5,000+ per dependent.

2.4 Sponsor requirement (Q1 2026 tightened)

This is the unique-to-Indonesia complication. The E33G requires an Indonesian sponsor — either: - An Indonesian individual residing in Indonesia (KTP holder). - A registered Indonesian company.

The sponsor takes legal responsibility for the applicant's compliance with visa terms. They sign a sponsor letter notarized in Indonesia.

Q1 2026 tightening: Imigrasi now verifies sponsors more thoroughly. Sponsors must be: - Verified Indonesian residents (KTP + recent residence registration). - Or Indonesian companies with proper business registration (SIUP, NIB).

For US applicants without Indonesian connections, this means using one of: - An Indonesian visa agency that provides sponsor services ($200-500 USD). - Friends or contacts in Indonesia with proper documentation. - Indonesian co-working space companies that offer sponsor services to members.

This added requirement makes Indonesia less accessible than countries without sponsor requirements (Spain, Portugal, Greece, Costa Rica, Colombia, Barbados).

2.5 Health insurance

Private health insurance with explicit Indonesia coverage, minimum $25,000 coverage. Validity matching the visa duration.

SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance Complete plan covers Indonesia and meets the $25k threshold. For broader international comparisons, see globalmedplan.com.

2.6 No prior immigration violations

Standard rule: no overstays, no deportations from Indonesia or ASEAN countries.

Income calculation in detail

The $60,000/year figure is gross, USD denominated. Imigrasi accepts: - Tax return (Form 1040 for US, P60 for UK) showing $60k+ in the most recent year. - 12 months of pay stubs showing salary + employer letter. - 12 months of freelance invoices + matching bank deposits.

Practical example for US W2: an engineer earning $5,500+/month gross ($66,000+ annual) clears the threshold with $6,000 buffer. Bring W-2 + 12 months of pay stubs.

Practical freelancer example: a freelancer with $75,000 annual revenue clears comfortably. Show 12 months of invoices and matching bank deposits.

The trap: some applicants think the $2,000 bank balance is a deposit (it's not — it's a minimum balance requirement at submission). Maintain $2,000+ in your account throughout the application period.

Application path: online via imigrasi.go.id (consular limited)

Indonesia's E33G is primarily applied for online via evisa.imigrasi.go.id. There is also a consular path through Indonesian embassies, but the online path is faster and standard.

Process:

  1. Find an Indonesian sponsor (individual or company).
  2. Get sponsor letter notarized in Indonesia.
  3. Create account on evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
  4. Upload all documents digitally + sponsor letter.
  5. Pay $300 USD application fee online.
  6. Wait 7-14 days for the Imigrasi decision.
  7. Receive E33G stamp digitally.
  8. Enter Indonesia within visa validity.
  9. Within 30 days of arrival, register at local Imigrasi office (KIM-S registration).

The 30-day in-country registration (KIM-S) is essential. Miss it and your E33G may be voided.

Visa agency option: many US/UK applicants use Indonesian visa agencies that: - Provide sponsor services. - Handle the online application paperwork. - Coordinate the in-country registration. - Cost: $200-500 USD typically (in addition to the $300 government fee).

For applicants without Indonesian contacts, the agency option is the practical path.

Required documents

Imigrasi's official list:

  1. Passport with at least 12 months validity beyond intended stay, 2 blank pages.
  2. Application form (online via evisa.imigrasi.go.id).
  3. Recent passport photo (digital upload).
  4. $300 USD application fee receipt.
  5. Income proof: previous tax year showing $60,000+ gross.
  6. Bank statement showing $2,000+ minimum balance dated within 30 days.
  7. Sponsor letter (Indonesian individual or company), notarized.
  8. Letter from foreign employer (or list of clients) confirming remote work.
  9. Health insurance certificate, $25k+ coverage, valid for visa duration.
  10. Cover letter explaining work setup and intent.
  11. (Family) marriage certificate + birth certificates apostilled and translated to Bahasa Indonesia.

After approval and arrival: 12. KIM-S registration at local Imigrasi office (within 30 days).

Tax: 0% on foreign-source income

This is one of Indonesia's main competitive advantages.

The rule (Permenkumham 22/2023 + Ministerio Hacienda Indonesia clarification 2024): E33G holders working remotely for foreign employers/clients are NOT considered Indonesian tax residents during their E33G stay. Foreign-source income is exempt from Indonesian income tax.

This is unusual — Indonesia's general 183-day rule for tax residency does NOT apply to E33G holders. The visa category itself grants the exemption.

For US W2 employees on the E33G: - Salary or invoices paid by US/UK/EU companies → 0% Indonesian tax. - Indonesian-source income (selling to Indonesian clients, real estate rental in Indonesia) → standard Indonesian rates apply.

For US citizens: FEIE excludes the first $132,900/year (2026) of earned income from US federal tax. Combined with Indonesia's 0% on foreign income, US W2 earners under $132,900 pay near-zero total income tax during the E33G period.

Combined burden for a US W2 at $80k: - Indonesian: 0% on foreign income. - US federal: 0% (FEIE wipes income). - Net: ~0% on income up to $132,900/year for the 2-year E33G period.

Comparable to Croatia (DNV foreign-source exempt), Costa Rica (territorial), and Barbados (Welcome Stamp 0%). Indonesia adds the longest renewability of these (2 years vs Croatia's 18 months) but with the sponsor requirement complication.

Common rejection reasons

Patterns flagged by Indonesian immigration lawyers in 2024-2026:

  1. Income proof inconsistency between tax return and bank statements.
  2. Bank balance below $2,000 at submission date.
  3. Sponsor not properly verified — KTP missing, business registration expired, or sponsor's status changed.
  4. Q1 2026 tightening: sponsors that were accepted in 2024-2025 are now rejected if their documentation is outdated.
  5. Insurance coverage below $25,000 or generic travel insurance with copays.
  6. Stale criminal record (Indonesia doesn't always require it but US consular practice does).
  7. Tourist (B211A) overstay history — Indonesia tracks ASEAN entries.

For each: fix it before you apply. The $300 fee is typically refundable on rejection at agencies but the government fee component is not.

Costs breakdown

Single applicant, first-year out-of-pocket:

Item Cost
E33G application fee $300 USD
Indonesian visa agency (typical) $200-500 USD
Apostilles on US documents (~2-3) $16-75 USD
Translations to Bahasa Indonesia $30-80 per document
Health insurance, full year $400-900 USD
Initial accommodation deposit (Bali) $500-1,500 USD
Sponsor service (if not via agency) $0-300 USD
Total minimum (single, with agency) ~$1,200-2,700 USD

Indonesia is mid-range in this lot. Cost of living in Bali is low — $1,000-1,800/month covers a comfortable expat lifestyle in Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu, or Sanur. Rentals are very accessible compared to EU equivalents.

Renewal & path beyond 2 years

The E33G path: - Year 1: initial 1-year E33G. - Year 2: extension for 1 additional year (total 2 years on E33G). - After 2 years: cannot extend the E33G. Mandatory 6-month cooldown before re-applying.

If you want to stay beyond 2 years, options include: - KITAS for spouse/family if married to Indonesian citizen (different process). - KITAS for investment (significant capital required). - Leave Indonesia for 6+ months and re-apply for a new E33G. - Switch to other visa categories (Single Entry Tourist, Multi Entry Business, etc.) but these are typically shorter and don't allow remote work formally.

The E33G does not lead to permanent residency (KITAP) directly. KITAP requires multiple consecutive years on KITAS, which the E33G is not.

For multi-year low-tax base in Asia, the strategy is typically: - Indonesia 2 years E33G → 6-month cooldown → Indonesia 2 more years E33G = 4.5 total years across two cycles. - Combined with another tax-friendly Asia destination (Thailand DTV when available, Malaysia DE rantau, Philippines special permits) for cooldown periods.

Indonesia E33G vs other options

  • Indonesia vs Spain DNV: Spain has lower income (€2,849 vs $5,000), longer renewability (5+ years to PR), Beckham Law (24% flat). Indonesia wins on tax (0% vs 24%) and lifestyle (tropical Asia vs Mediterranean Europe). See Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide.
  • Indonesia vs Mexico TRV: Mexico has lower income ($2,610 vs $5,000), longer residency (4y to PR), but standard 26-29% effective tax. Indonesia wins on tax; Mexico on income accessibility and US-integration.
  • Indonesia vs Costa Rica DNV: Both 0% tax foreign-source. Costa Rica has lower income ($3,000 vs $5,000) and 2-year cap. Indonesia has longer cycling option (2y + cooldown + 2y) but stricter sponsor.
  • Indonesia vs Barbados Welcome Stamp: Both 0% tax foreign-source. Barbados English oficial + 5-day processing + lower income ($50k vs $60k). Indonesia tropical Asia base, longer total stay possible. Barbados wins on simplicity.

FAQ

Can I work for an Indonesian company on the E33G? No. The E33G is for foreign-source income only. Indonesian employment requires KITAS.

How long does the application really take? 7-14 days online. Visa agencies sometimes faster (5-10 days end-to-end).

Do I need to speak Indonesian (Bahasa)? Useful but not required. Bali especially is English-friendly in tourist/expat areas (Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu). Bahasa basic helps with daily life outside expat zones.

Can I bring my family? Limited. Spouse + up to 2 children can be included with additional savings proof. Process less formal than EU options.

Can my spouse work in Indonesia? The dependent permit doesn't authorize Indonesian employment. Spouse can do remote work for foreign clients only.

Is the sponsor requirement a deal-breaker? For applicants without Indonesian contacts, agencies provide sponsor services for $200-500 USD. Most US/UK applicants use this option. The Q1 2026 tightening made the sponsor requirement more rigorous but agencies still cover it.

Do I lose my US health insurance? Once outside the US for extended periods, US insurance often has geographic exclusions. Most E33G holders use SafetyWing or upgrade to Cigna Global.

What about US tax obligations? US citizens still pay US tax on worldwide income. FEIE excludes $132,900/year (2026). Combined with Indonesia's 0%, near-zero total income tax up to FEIE limit.

Can I extend beyond 2 years on the E33G? No. After 2 years (1 + 1 extension), mandatory 6-month cooldown before re-applying for a new E33G.

Is Bali safe for digital nomads? Generally yes — strong expat community, established infrastructure, low violent crime. Visa scams and minor theft exist; standard precautions.

Next steps

If Indonesia fits your plan:

  1. Verify income meets $60,000/year in the previous tax year + maintain $2,000+ bank balance.
  2. Identify a sponsor — Indonesian individual or company, OR use an Indonesian visa agency ($200-500 USD).
  3. Get an Indonesia-compliant insurance policy with $25,000+ coverage. Our SafetyWing guide walks through compatible plans.
  4. Plan for the 2-year cap + cooldown. If you want longer Indonesian residence, plan 6-month gaps in another country.

Indonesia is right when you want a 1-2 year tropical Asia base with 0% tax + Bali expat infrastructure + relatively cheap cost of living. It's not right if you want long-term residency (no KITAP path from E33G) or if the sponsor requirement is impractical.
